SCAD Visit

I will be away from the studio for a bit. I'll be down south in Savannah, GA visiting SCAD. I'll be doing a workshop or two and some portfolio reviews with a great line up of other creators and industry folk. I'll update with some pics when I get back. See you all down there.

Gran'Ma Ben Daily Sketch

Going back to Bone for a little inspiration. I loved that one of the toughest characters in this book was the Grandmother. So today's sketch was Gran'Ma Ben.

Concrete Daily Sketch

Some days I have a blank on what to sketch for the morning warm-up. This is where Twitter comes in handy. I reach out and ask for suggestions, get blasted with around 100 in a few minutes and then like magic, I no longer have a blank. Connecting directly with people like that is fantastic and can be really inspiring.

Today's suggestion came from my friend, Jeff Lemire. Concrete. Now, I'm going to expose myself (not in that what, take it easy) and admit I've never met Concrete. I have no reason why. It's just one of those books I have always been aware of but was never exposed to it. No one ever talked to me about it, or suggested reading it, and I'm not really sure. There, I said it. I haven't read Concrete. But the character design is so appealing. A big rock guy. I liked that the instinct to make rock harsh, with an edge. But Concrete was soft, round, subtle. What a great design.

Spawn Daily Sketch

I LOVED Spawn. A lot of people want to rewrite the 90's like none of us enjoyed what was going on and that comics were all around bad. But if you've noticed lately, all of us that grew up on comics in the 90's are now MAKING the comics and we've been bringing it all back. Capullo is drawing one of the top sellers, Extreme Studios is relaunching, Age of Apocalypse being brought back in Uncanny X-Force (one of the best books on shelves right now) and I could on.

The 90's were fun. the 90's got me into comics so that will always be MY era of comics. Once day I'm sure I'll find an era to complain about and some youngster will be smacking me around. But until then, I'll be here loving those comics that got me excited to roll into the store every Wednesday. No comic did that for me more than Spawn.

It was a big story that covered Earth, Heaven and Hell but felt small at times. A confused guy living in an alley with bums. A homeless wizard like character would come and hint towards the bigger things to come. A cast of characters ranging from politicians and mobsters to angels and giant demons and clowns and, and, and. It was an awesome world and I loved living in it.

So todays warm up is Spawn. I'm a little unhappy with how safe this one feels. I really intended to push it but as I was coming to a finish I realized I didn't really go that far. I'll have to revisit Spawn again soon and get my revenge.

TMNT Daily Sketch

I grew up on these guys. I had a club with the neighborhood called the Turtle Club. We each picked a name, sat in a shed with a black and white TV and watched whatever channels we could get to come in. I loved this stuff. It's probably the reason I've never really drawn them. It's like they're too much a part of me to mess with. I was commissioned to work on one of the shows once but they didn't like my take.

I'm ok with my take here, but I will be revisiting the Turtles at a later date, that's for sure.

Labyrinth Daily Sketch

The Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies of all time. As much as I love that movie, I do not have a ton of love for the David Bowie Goblin King. It's one of the only parts of the movie (besides the black screen dancing flame puppets) that just doesn't hold up in time. It's a bit dated. So today I played with that design a bit.

Hermione Daily Sketch

Still playing with the Harry Potter world this morning. I really must wanted to experiment with the approach to Hermione's hair. I have always seen these characters in a more Roald Dahl universe than the glossy one we've come to know in the movies. Don't get me wrong, I love that version too, but there's something frayed about how I see the world in my head.

Harry Potter Daily Sketch

I could draw Harry a million times and come up with a slightly different way to depict him. And each I time I think... Nope, that's not it. One day I'll get him just right and the Rowling will let me do the further adventures of the Harry Potter universe.
